Ollie Watkins: eight goal involvements match Al Hilal mark

by Alex Matthews

Ollie Watkins has matched an Al Hilal record after registering four goals and four assists in his first five Roshn Saudi League appearances.

The Saudi Pro League highlighted his start in a new feature, putting the England striker level with Wesley for the most goal involvements by an Al Hilal player in their opening five games in the competition.

According to the league’s official feature, Wesley set the previous benchmark in the 2012-13 season with seven goals and one assist. Ollie Watkins has reached the same total of eight through a different split.

His latest league appearance made a big contribution to those numbers. In Al Hilal’s 3-2 win over Al Ittihad, Watkins scored once and supplied two assists.

That combination matters for Simone Inzaghi’s side. Ollie Watkins has provided a finishing option, but he has also helped create goals for the players around him.

The record covers his first five appearances in the Saudi league. It does not include his contribution in the AFC Champions League Elite.

More than goals in Watkins’ Al Hilal start

The SPL feature traces part of that creative streak to his earlier experience as a winger. It also points to the movement he developed during his time at Aston Villa.

Watkins’ runs can offer an option behind a defence and help give his team-mates somewhere to play the ball. That is useful in an Al Hilal side with several players capable of finding a forward’s movement.

The early return is encouraging, but five league appearances remain a small sample. Matching the club mark is a measure of his start, rather than a guarantee of what comes next.

Watkins has also contributed in continental competition. He scored in Al Hilal’s 2-0 away win over Al Sadd, alongside Ruben Neves, as the club continued its AFC Champions League Elite campaign.

That result is separate from the league record, but it adds to a productive opening period. For Al Hilal, the task now is to keep turning Ollie Watkins’ goals, assists and movement into results over a longer run.
